This interactive storybook app tells the story of Turikatuku, a prominent female puhi from Whangaroa.

It documents Turikatuku’s whakapapa, the history of her people, and important events that impacted them in the early 1800s.

Turikatuku’s story is told in te reo Māori and English, with voice-overs in both languages read by 2 of her descendants. The app has 3 chapters and is aimed for reading ages 8–12 years.

The National Library of New Zealand led this project, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Ministry for Culture and Heritage, and other partners.

Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Whangaroa researched and wrote the narrative for the app in partnership with the National Library of New Zealand. Kiwa Digital developed the software and commissioned illustrations.
